Plans for a new medical center in Columbus County are moving forward. The proposed 144,000-square-foot building would bring care to those near U.S. 74. in Delco. Columbus Regional Healthcare System filed the needed state papers this week.
The new site will take shape where students once filled classrooms at Acme-Delco Middle School. Sitting on 18 acres near major roads, U.S. 74 and N.C. 87, plans show space for surgery, emergency care with 11 treatment rooms, and medical testing equipment.
"The communities between Whiteville and Wilmington are growing rapidly, and their healthcare needs are growing with them," said Jason Beck, president and CEO of Columbus Regional Healthcare System, per WWAY TV3.
Medical testing will include CT scans, X-rays, and ultrasound machines. Patients can also get infusion treatments at the site. A special wing will build upon cancer treatments now given at the Donayre Cancer Care Center.
The shift in care needs stems from housing costs pushing inland. As beach area prices climb, more families and older adults move along U.S. 74. Right now, they face long drives through thick traffic when they need quick medical help.
Success marks Columbus Regional's work in the area. Since opening four specialty clinics in Leland two years ago, the staff has helped more than 11,000 patients get better.
Beck shared his thoughts with Columbus County News: "For 90 years, Columbus Regional Healthcare System has served patients and families with a simple mission: to provide high-quality, accessible care when and where our neighbors need it most."
State health officials must now review and approve the plans. Only then can work begin on the new medical center.
