Lumber River State Park will hold a free First Day Hike on Jan. 1, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Rangers will lead walks at Princess Ann and Chalk Bank access points. This guided walk is part of a nationwide tradition bringing people outdoors to start the year.
Hikers attending the Princess Ann Access should meet at the Picnic Shelter, found at 2819 Princess Ann Road in Orrum. Chalk Bank Access attendees will gather by the pond in the parking lot at 26040 Raeford Road in Wagram. Both spots offer different views of the park's natural areas.
The walk suits experienced hikers and newcomers alike. No prior skill is required.
Participants should dress for the weather and wear shoes built for walking. Pets on leashes can come along. Binoculars might help those hoping to see birds or other animals, though they're not required.
Families are encouraged to attend this free event. Rangers will talk about the park's plants, animals, and waterways during the walks. Participants can ask questions and learn about what makes this area unique.
First Day Hikes happen at parks throughout the United States each Jan. 1. The program was created to get Americans outside at the start of every year. It's grown into a tradition that thousands join annually.
