Head coach Hubert Davis, his father, wept as he watched the shot fall through the net. The crowd erupted. Teammates bolted off the bench and had to be restrained by an official to prevent them from storming onto the hardwood.
"I kinda blacked out," said Elijah Davis, according to The News & Observer.
Hubert Davis paused for 12 seconds when asked about the moment during the postgame press conference. "I'm the head coach, so I try to be head coach, not dad," said Coach Davis. "That was a really awesome, cool moment. I heard his little brother took off his shirt and started waving it when Elijah hit the 3. Mom was really happy, younger sister was really happy."
Water sprayed through the locker room after the game. Both Elijah Davis and High Point transfer Ivan Matlekovic, who also scored his first points as a Tar Heel that night, got drenched.
"Just a couple of years ago, I thought I was gonna quit basketball," said Elijah Davis per The Fayetteville Observer. "I battled an injury and just kind of fell out of love with the game."
Caleb Wilson led UNC with 21 points. Grabbed 12 rebounds, swatted four blocks, and swiped three steals in the win. Veesaar added 16 points and 10 boards as the Tar Heels rolled past the Pirates. The victory stretched Carolina's streak to 52 straight wins against in-state, non-ACC opponents.
