The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public gathering on March 26. The session will cover the plannedĀ changes to Second Street in Lumberton. This $9.5 million project seeks to create safer walking conditions across two miles of the downtown corridor, which doubles as N.C. Highway 72.

Plans call for additional sidewalks. Pedestrian signals will go up. High-visibility crosswalks are coming, along with mid-block refuge islands built into the median. The construction zone stretches from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to North Roberts Avenue.

Engineers and planning consultants will display project maps during the public meeting. Other materials will be available too. The session runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at East Lumberton Baptist Church, located at 201 Old Whiteville Road.

NCDOT has posted the project details on its public input website. The public can reach the design team by email at 2ndstreet-improvements-robeson@publicinput.com. There's a phone option as well: 984-205-6615, then enter project code 11303.

Comments received by April 10 will shape the final design. Construction starts in fall 2027.

NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for those who wish to participate in this meeting.
